Need architecture help from fellow golfers in finland
 

i need some inside help with a finnish architecture magazine.
i am a young architect in québec canada. Finland has some of the best architecture (buildings) i've ever seen...i used alot of examples from the finnish to create my own projects or just to show that in a similar climate, it can be done.

i used to have a subscription to the magazine ARK see this website:

i would like to subscribe to this mag again, but it will cost me about 200-250$ canadian a year for 6 issues seeing i'm over seas...that is unreal.
i was wondering if anybody can get me a better deal along with past issues from 2004-2005 and a new subscription. so if you know any architects or students, that would be awesome.

also me and lily are starting to plan for a trip to finland, so any golf courses or 'must sees' would also be appreciated...as well as the 'dont go there'.

The "Must see" lists are always a bit subjective but a short list would probably end up being something like:

Kytäjä Golf
Nordcenter G&C Club
Master Golf Club

Other intresting places would be:

Helsingin Golf Klubi / Tali (Ladies Finnish Masters 2006)
Sarfvik Golfclub

Ask around, but these should come up more often than not.

Off cause, you may be talking about some other country named Finland, since some of the best architecture definately isn't around here. :)

That's a cool picture of the...ermm...controversial museum of modern art. Some people just love to hate this one! As usual we'll have to wait like 10-20 years to reach some sort of conclusion about the (de)merits of the building.

If we are lucky it will become a landmark building for Helsinki - though Sydney Opera house it is not.

One good thing about Helsinki is that you have easy access to Stockholm and St. Peterburg. :)

Anyways, if the ARK thing won't pan out for you - drop a line - I can ask around local seconhand bookshops for pre-owned magazines.

turtle thing is one of the most famous historical modern buildings in the world like it or not. The initial concept was thought by the architect doing the dishes...now look back to that pic and you can see that, remember, that was the inspiration, he did not put 'made in china' on the top of the bowls..lol....

and Vaako, about controversial architecture, if there is one thing that i have learned as a student and architect, it does not matter if its liked or disliked, the most important thing is it has to move the human soul, mans emotions...hate and dislike are part of those emotions. Nothing worse than being left with a 'nothing' feeling when asked about a building, remember they are the skin we live in, inside and outside.

The Sydney Opera house is right there w/ Pyramids, Empire State Building, Eiffel tower and Silly Letters on a hillside - no argument. But everybody does love turtles. If I say Chrysler Building, can you name the city?

What you say about emotions is fine - but emotions are a luxury. First you need plumbing that works and roof that doesn't leak. I know - I'm a dinosaur and should go take a dive in La Brea tar pits. :)
